 Surin Islands - North of the Similan Islands lies Koh Bon, Koh Tachai and the Surin Islands including Richelieu Rock. All islands offer a class of diving vastly different from that experienced at the Similans and if you're after the big fish, then it shouldn't be missed.
Koh Bon located 20km north of the Similans is famous for the natural perforation carved through the island. The southwest dive site is a sheer wall 35m deep followed by a stepped ridge descending to 45m. Leopard sharks are sited on the ridge and sandy flats below. Koh Bon is also noted as one of the better places to experience the majesty of diving with Manta Rays.

Koh Tachai 25km north of Koh Bon, Koh Tachai's lush tropical foliage runs over granite to a beautiful sandy beach on its north coast.
Tachai is famous for an underwater ridge that juts out at 90 degrees to the island. Tachai offers Rays, Leopard Sharks & Nurse
Sharks. Whale sharks are also sighted on a regular basis.
Koh Surin & Richelieu Rock The Surin Islands although rather beautiful topside are rather boring below the waves. Richelieu Rock,
however, is one of the best places in the world for encountering Whalesharks.

Koh Similan
The Similan islands gather an extended range of world-class dive sites. Fish life there is the most varied of Thailand
and reef sharks, turtles and rays make regular appearances. The coral is healthy and abundant : gorgonians, dendronephthyas,
shelter hips of invertebrates. Shall we talk, again, about the excellent visibility that the mainly rocky bottom provides?
Definitely, the nine islands offer enough to justify a whole trip, and every nature lover will be satisfied.

Surin Islands
The Surin islands offer a wide variety of diving and snorkelling sites, from the huge granite boulders so typical of the Andaman,
to the underwater gardens of extremely well preserved hard coral. Turtles, eagle rays, are common encounters. The islands are also
the perfect setting for some relaxation after a long day bubbling around. White sand beaches, green jungle, sea eagles circling in
the sky!

Koh Bon and Koh Tachai
These are two tiny islands that lie between the Surins and the Similan Archipelago. Surrounded by deep waters,
they're often visited by numerous pelagics. Manta rays are not a rare sighting there! Interesting underwater
topographies, arches, swim-through and often extremely good visibility.

Richelieu Rock
The famous Richelieu Rock is actually a group of big pinnacles covered by beautiful purple soft coral.
A lot of fish activity here, due to the deep waters around and the often-fair current: huge schools of big
eye trevallies, barracudas, breams and yellow-striped snappers give the site a truly magical atmosphere.
Visibility can be spectacular, and large pelagics, like mantas and whale sharks, are regularly spotted.

Photographers, grab your macro lenses! The green waters of Koh Payam will give you the perfect way to
practice your 'muck diving' skills! Numerous kinds of nudibranchs, flat worms, ascidians, sponges and colorful
soft corals, hips of juvenile fishes and even several species of sea horses are guaranteed here if you possess
sharp eyes.

Similan Islands General Info - Andaman Sea Thailand

The Similan Islands are by far the most spectacular group of dive sites that Thailand has to offer
and are on par with some of the best diving destinations worldwide.
The Similans are a huge scuba diving destination popular with liveaboard diving operators based in
Phuket & Khao Lak. Being situated on the coast north of Phuket The Khao Lak operators are also
close enough to run day trips by speedboat to this group of spectacular diving sites. None of this
picturesque group of nine islands are inhabited - other than by the abundant marine life of course.
Located about one hundred kilometres northwest of Phuket, the Similans consist of nine granite islands
covered in lush, tropical, jungle foliage, surrounded by sparkling clear blue oceans.Similans MAp The
beaches are made up of the finest white powdery sand and literally melt into the warm tropical waters.
The east coast, with its white powdery beaches, feature hard coral gardens which slope down to 40m.
Drift diving is the name of the game here as divers use the current to propel them along the vibrantly
rich reefs teeming with unusual and interesting marine life.
The west coast of the marine park, facing out towards the Andaman Islands, offers pace and exhilaration
as divers soar through and around Huge granite boulders. Dramatic rock formations abound including:
holes, overhangs, swimthroughs and canyons. There is an amazing variety of colourful soft corals and
enormous sea fans that span metres across. There are truly very few places on earth like this.
The length of dive safari trips vary from three to five days, often longer if the live-aboard includes
the Similans as just one stop on the itinerary. |
