Chiang Mai to Mae Sot by Direct Bus

The Green Bus Company offers daily departures from Chiang Mai Bus Terminal 3 to Mae Sot at 13:30. The Express service is the most popular option, but there’s also a VIP service for those wanting extra comfort. The bus journey will take you around 6 hours and 45 minutes. The Express tickets cost around 426 THB, while the VIP ticket costs 621 THB. You can book your tickets online or from their office in Chiang Mai. This option is ideal for those wanting to reach Mae Sot without any layovers or transfers.

Chiang Mai to Mae Sot by Train and Bus

  • Travel time: 11-12 hours

If you’re looking for a more scenic option, then taking the train and bus will be perfect for you.

The journey has two stages, beginning with a train ride from Chiang Mai to Phitsanulok.

There are six trains available daily, and the journey will take around 5-6 hours. We recommend taking the morning or the night train to save up on your time. The fare would be around 250-300 THB, depending on the class.

From Phitsanulok, you can find many minivan and bus services to Mae Sot. These depart regularly from Phitsanulok Bus Station 2. Private minivans are the quickest option, but larger public buses are the cheapest. The minivan journey will take around 4 hours, whereas the bus journey will take around 5 hours. Tickets cost around 330 THB. We advise booking your tickets in advance if you’re traveling during peak season or during weekends.
