Surat Thani railway station has a long history that dates back to 1915 when it was first opened and named “Phun Phin Station”. However, the station faced difficult times during World War II, when the Imperial Japanese Army used it as a base for military activity. Despite being bombed by American aircraft in May 1945, the station was rebuilt and a new building was completed in 1954. – Ticketing Counters

If you’re planning on taking the train through Surat Thani, it’s worth knowing there are 3 ticketing counters available at the train station. Ticketing counters are located on the right side of the station in the ticket hall. Here you can purchase tickets for your journey, including sleeper tickets, which are known to sell out quickly. To avoid disappointment, we recommend booking these tickets in advance online.

Luckily, the staff at the counters speaks English, so you won’t have any difficulty booking a ticket or inquiring about the schedule. However, be prepared and have some cash with you, bank terminals at counters are often not working.

  1. Use one of the three ticket counters located in the ticket hall (on the right side of the station). The advantage of buying tickets directly at the counter is the lowest price. However, sleeper trains sell out fast, so we recommend either visiting the station before the day of travel, and booking them, or proceeding to option two.
  2. Online via partner website which sells tickets for the Thai Railway trains. They make life easier, and you can use one of the online payment methods. The cost of tickets, when you book online, is a little higher, but it’s worth paying a small fee for ensuring a comfortable journey.

How to Get from Surat Thani Train Station to Surat Thani Town

If you’re arriving in Surat Thani via train and need to get to the town center, there are a few options available to you: local bus and taxi. 

Bus to Surat Thani Town

The train station is located 15 km (10 miles) west of the Surat Thani town center, but you can catch a frequent air-conditioned local bus from the bus parking next to the train station. When you exit the station, turn left and it should be about a 15 km journey to reach the town. The bus fare is only 20 baht and the journey usually takes about 40-50 minutes. 

It’s worth noting that some locals may try to direct you to a red way to buy tickets from their agency for a higher-priced minivan, so keep an eye out for this. Overall, taking the bus from Surat Thani train station to town is a convenient and affordable option.

Taxi to Surat Thani Town

The second option for getting to the town is by taking a taxi. The taxi service counter is located just outside the station. With regular cars at the ready, the taxi service can help transport you to any destination within Surat Thani, including the town center. A taxi ride from the train station to the center of town takes approximately 30-40 minutes with prices starting from just 140 THB ($4.10).
