This is the easiest and the most popular way to travel between the two destinations. The route is run by the GreenBus company, which has a very good reputation in Thailand. These are direct buses, and the whole trip from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai takes just a little over 3 hours. What’s more, there are 13 departures during the day, so you can choose the trip based on your travel plans. The first bus leaves Chiang Rai at 7:30 am, and the last one at 17:45.
There are two types of buses operating on this route – Express and VIP buses. As the name suggests, VIP buses are better equipped. Express bus trips are also a bit longer, they take 3 hours and 45 minutes to reach Chiang Mai. VIP buses cover the same distance in 3 hours and 20 minutes.
VIP buses have toilets onboard, while Express buses don’t.
All the buses depart from Chiang Rai Bus Terminal 1 and arrive at Chiang Mai Bus Terminal 3. The prices vary from 271 THB up to 380 THB, depending on the type of bus you choose; express or VIP bus. Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai by Flight
Unfortunately, there are no direct flights between Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, you can only find self-connect tickets with a stopover in Bangkok. The shortest connecting flight you can find takes around 4 hours in total. Prices for the combo trip start at 2400 THB.
Departures are done from the CEI Chiang Rai Airport, located around 20 minutes away from the Chiang Rai city center.
Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai by Taxi
Traveling by taxi between Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai is, without a doubt, the fastest way to get between the two cities, taking just three hours. However, it comes with a price tag – prices start at 3800 THB making it by far the most expensive transport option.
