How to Get from Krabi to Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is a beautiful island in Thailand that is ideal for a relaxing holiday. The island is particularly well-known for its breathtakingly beautiful sandy beaches, which are reminiscent of a tropical paradise. There’s no airport on the island, the closest airport is located in Krabi. If you’re exploring travel options between Krabi and Koh Lanta, I have good news for you! You can get there by minivan (and a short ferry ride), taxi and ferry, or just ferry if you choose to depart directly from the pier.

Krabi to Koh Lanta Distance

It depends on which type of transport you choose. If you travel from Krabi to Koh Lanta by ferry, the distance is just 40 km, the land road is around 85 km. It’s still very close!

Taking an air-conditioned 18-seater minibus is quite a comfortable travel option. Because they are smaller, less crowded, and faster, minibusses are quite popular for trips to Koh Lanta. In addition, they are less expensive than a private taxi.

You can choose a departure from the Krabi bus terminal, or from the Krabi Airport. In Koh Lanta, minibusses arrive at the Na Lanta Restaurant, Koh Lanta.

The trip includes a brief ferry ride (during which you don’t get out of the minivan) and takes around 2 hours in total.

Krabi to Koh Lanta by Minivan

The pick-up point from the airport is conveniently located outside Terminal 2, while if you depart from a hotel, make sure you’re ready at the lobby at least 30 minutes before departure time. If you depart from the Krabi bus terminal, check in at counter number 11 or 33.

Additionally, to ensure a pleasant journey, remember to purchase an extra seat beside you if you’re traveling with extra large luggage.

Ferry from Krabi to Koh Lanta

Traveling from Krabi to Koh Lanta is possible by taking an Ao Nang Travel And Tour ferry. In Krabi, ferries depart from the Nopparat Thara Pier, Ao Nang, and from Floating Pier East Railay, and arrive in Koh Lanta at Saladan Pier. That’s a very convenient drop-off point because from there you can easily get to literally everywhere in Koh Lanta. To get to the hotel from the pier, take a taxi. Taxis waiting at the pier are so overpriced, that we don’t recommend taking them. Take a five-minute walk to the town center and you’ll be able to take a taxi for half the price.

Traveling by sea has a lot of advantages. First of all this route is scenic. Plus the luggage allowance is larger so you don’t have to worry that your suitcases won’t fit into the minivan.

Like all the other types of transport ferries have their disadvantages. These are seasickness, more risks when traveling in rough weather, and the inability to take any bikes, pets, or kayaks on board.

Luckily, ferries have a WC on board which you can use at any time. Two decks are air-conditioned so you will feel comfortable even during the hot weather. The upper deck is open-air.

If you choose to travel by ferry keep an eye on the weather forecast. If weather conditions are severe – the ferry might not sail, and you will be able to reschedule your trip to the next day or get a refund.

Since ferries depart from Krabi only once a day in the morning, you may wish to book tickets in advance. There is usually a very high demand for the ferry crossing so booking tickets online in advance will save you lots of time.

Krabi to Koh Lanta by Taxi

Taxies will take the same land route as the minivans, except, they will travel much faster. The approximate travel time between Krabi and Koh Lanta by taxi is around 2 hours (1 hour faster than by the shared van).

Furthermore, a taxi ride from Krabi to Koh Lanta won’t put a strain on the wallet. Prices start at 1,700 THB, keep in mind that this is the price for the entire car. It will be much cheaper if you split the cost between a party of four people. You may also save money on taxi fares by looking for and scheduling your ride well in advance of your arrival.

Furthermore, taxis do not operate on a set timetable, so you won’t have to worry about missed journeys because it is not fixed.

What’s most convenient, you can order a taxi ride directly from Krabi Airport. Your driver will wait for you there with a signboard. A taxi will take you to any hotel in Koh Lanta. That’s also convenient, because if you travel by ferry, you’ll have to get an extra taxi from the pier to the hotel, and it may cost $3-$5.
